Sizing Up The N-Gage
Which system is smaller, N-Gage or GBA?

September 24, 2003 - In order to get a better feel for the size of Nokia's soon-to-be-released portable game deck, we have provided a side-by-side comparison of the N-Gage's dimensions and Nintendo's two Game Boy Advance models. We are not aiming to crown one handheld the "supreme ruler of all things pocket sized", we're just giving you an idea of what to expect from Nokia's fledgling handheld when it hits the stores October 7th. Besides, isn't it true that size doesn't really matter? It does matter!? Well it's not like anyone around here has anything to worry about (cough-N-Gage editors especially-cough).

IGN understands that numbers can never carry the same impact as pictures, so we've included a slew of images that stress the different systems' sizes. We've even taken the liberty to add a special mystery picture series on the media page that will take you on a journey with the N-Gage exporing magical relics from the IGN offices. What will that crazy N-Gage get into next-chuckle chuckle.

Here are the dimensions of the handhelds:

Game Boy Advance (standard model)
(L x W x D) 144.5 x 82 x 24.5mm.

(L x W x D) 133.7 x 69.7 x 20.2mm.

Game Boy Advance SP (closed)
(L x W x D) 83.8 x 82 x 24.4mm.

Here are the screen sizes:

176 x 208 pixels.

Game Boy Advance
240 x 160 pixels.

Nokia's handheld is slightly smaller than the original GBA design, and is a little larger than Nintendo's new GBA SP model. We found that the N-Gage fits in most pockets as easily as the other two systems, which will leave plenty of room for its games. N-Gage game cards are miniscule; they are even dwarfed by the already small GBA cartridges.

We also took the N-Gage around the office to compare it to some of the disturbing items that litter the IGN cubicles. Check out more images of the N-Gage and its trip around the IGN office by visiting the media page below.
